Reductions in streamflow from groundwater pumping can negatively impact water users and aquatic ecosystems but are challenging to estimate due to the time and expertise required to develop numerical models often used in water management. This paper develops a new approach – a combination of simpler, less expensive analytical models and streamflow depletion functions, called analytical depletion functions. This paper evaluated 50 analytical depletion functions by comparing them with a numerical model and found that some can predict streamflow depletion well. These results indicate that analytical depletion functions may be useful water management decision support tools in many locations where expensive numerical models are not available.
