Modeling residential development in California from 2000 to 2050: Integrating wildfire risk, wildland and agricultural encroachment

Between 1940 and 2000, nearly 10 million housing units were constructed in California. This new development led to increased interaction between human and natural communities. Tha authors of this paper modeled the extent and intensity of future housing settlements between 2000 and 2050 using three development scenarios. Using this model, the authors estimate that California's exurban land classes—those lying outside cities and usually beyond suburbs—will replace nearly 12 million acres of wild and agricultural lands by 2050. This growth will not only increase threats to ecosystems but also to people as the number of houses in “very high” wildfire severity zones increases by nearly 1 million.
